ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE IS MORE THAN JUST GETTING STRONGER.
Strength matters. But becoming a better athlete requires more than lifting weights.
Our training develops the physical qualities athletes need to produce force, move explosively, accelerate, decelerate and change direction.
STRENGTH
Strength is the foundation.
We help athletes develop relative strength—getting stronger while still being able to move their body effectively.
The stronger an athlete becomes relative to their body weight, the more potential they have to put force into the ground when they run, jump and compete.
SPEED & ACCELERATION
Getting faster takes more than running through ladders or putting on a parachute.
We teach athletes how to accelerate, apply force into the ground and improve their sprint mechanics.
And when we train speed, we actually train speed.
Athletes sprint at high intensity with enough recovery between reps to maintain quality.
EXPLOSIVENESS
Being strong is important. Being able to use that strength quickly is what makes it athletic.
We use jumps, medicine-ball throws and other explosive movements to teach athletes to produce force fast.
You can’t jump slow.
DECELERATION & CHANGE OF DIRECTION
Sports aren’t played in a straight line.
Athletes have to stop, absorb force, change direction and accelerate again.
We train athletes to become stronger and more confident in those positions so they can move more efficiently on the field or court.
FEET, ANKLES & MOVEMENT
Strong athletes are built from the ground up.
We incorporate training for the feet and ankles along with mobility and movement work to help athletes build a stronger foundation for running, jumping and changing direction.
WE’RE NOT TRYING TO MAKE ATHLETES TIRED.
We’re trying to make them better.
Every exercise should have a reason for being in the program.
EVERY SESSION HAS A PURPOSE.
Athletes don’t walk into Build and just start doing random exercises.
Every session is planned and coached with the goal of helping them become a better athlete.
A typical training session may include:
MOVEMENT PREP
We start by preparing the body to train with mobility, movement and exercises designed to get athletes ready for the work ahead.
SPEED & EXPLOSIVE WORK
Sprints, jumps, medicine-ball throws and other explosive movements are typically performed early in the session while athletes are fresh and able to move with high intent.
STRENGTH TRAINING
Athletes learn how to squat, hinge, push, pull, carry and perform other strength movements with proper technique.
As they become more experienced, the training progresses with them.
ACCESSORY & INJURY-REDUCTION WORK
We build the smaller pieces too—feet, ankles, hips, hamstrings, shoulders, core and other areas that help athletes become stronger and more resilient.
CONDITIONING — WHEN IT MAKES SENSE
Conditioning has a place, but we don’t confuse conditioning with speed training.
If an athlete is breathing hard, they’re probably not training speed anymore.
Speed requires high-quality effort and adequate recovery.
TRAINING CHANGES AS THE ATHLETE CHANGES.
A middle school athlete walking into Build for the first time shouldn’t train exactly like an experienced high school athlete.
We adjust exercises, loads and progressions based on the athlete in front of us.
Same training environment. Individual starting points.
EVERY ATHLETE HAS TO START SOMEWHERE.
You don’t have to wait until your athlete is bigger, stronger, older or more experienced to start training.
At Build Performance, we work primarily with middle school and high school athletes from a variety of sports and experience levels.
NEW TO STRENGTH TRAINING?
That’s completely fine.
We teach athletes how to train before expecting them to train heavy. They’ll learn proper technique, understand the basic movements and build a foundation they can continue developing over time.
ALREADY AN EXPERIENCED ATHLETE?
Training progresses with the athlete.
As strength, movement quality and training experience improve, we can increase the challenge and continue developing strength, speed, power and athleticism.
MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES
You don’t have to specialize in one sport to benefit from sports performance training.
Getting stronger, faster and more explosive can help build physical qualities that carry over across many different sports.
IN-SEASON OR OFF-SEASON
Training doesn’t have to stop when the season starts.
The off-season gives us more opportunity to push development and make bigger improvements.
During the in-season, training can shift toward maintaining strength, managing overall workload and helping the athlete stay prepared to compete.
DIFFERENT SPORTS. DIFFERENT AGES. SAME GOAL.
Help each athlete become a stronger, faster and more capable version of themselves.
COACHED FROM START TO FINISH.
Athletes don’t come to Build, get handed a workout and figure it out on their own.
We coach.
Every session is led by a coach who teaches technique, makes corrections, adjusts exercises when needed and helps athletes understand how to train.
SMALL-GROUP TRAINING
Athletes train alongside other athletes who are working toward the same thing—getting better.
The small-group environment gives athletes an opportunity to compete, encourage each other and have fun while still receiving individual coaching.
A PLAN, NOT RANDOM WORKOUTS
Training should build on itself.
Our programming is designed to progress over time so athletes aren’t just completing workouts—they’re developing strength, speed, explosiveness and movement.
COACHING THE ATHLETE IN FRONT OF US
Not every athlete needs the same weight, exercise or progression.
We can adjust the training based on an athlete’s age, experience and current ability while still keeping them part of the group.
WORK HARD. HAVE FUN. GET BETTER.
We want Build to be a place athletes enjoy coming to, while also understanding that getting better takes consistency and effort.
You get them here. We’ll take care of the training.
TRAINING SHOULD LEAD TO PROGRESS.
Working hard matters. But we also want to know whether the training is actually working.
That’s why we periodically test key areas of athletic performance.
SPEED
We use the 20-yard sprint to measure acceleration and an athlete’s ability to cover ground quickly.
EXPLOSIVENESS
The broad jump gives us a simple way to measure lower-body power and horizontal explosiveness.
UPPER-BODY POWER
The overhead medicine-ball throw helps us measure an athlete’s ability to produce force explosively through the entire body.
STRENGTH
We also track strength through exercises such as the bench press or dumbbell floor press, along with progress athletes make throughout their regular training.
THE GOAL ISN’T JUST A BETTER TEST SCORE.
Testing gives athletes something objective to work toward and gives our coaches another way to evaluate the training.
But numbers are only part of the picture.
We also want to see athletes become stronger, move better, train with more confidence and develop physical qualities that can carry over to their sport.
Train. Test. Learn. Keep getting better.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What age should an athlete start strength training?
There isn’t one perfect age to start.
What matters most is that the training is appropriate for the athlete’s age and experience and that they are being coached properly.
For younger or inexperienced athletes, we focus on learning movements, developing coordination, building confidence and establishing good training habits before worrying about how much weight they can lift.
Will lifting weights make my athlete slower?
No. Our goal is actually the opposite.
Strength gives an athlete a greater ability to produce force. When we combine that strength with sprinting, jumping and explosive training, we’re working to help athletes become stronger AND faster, not simply stronger in the weight room.
Does my athlete need weight-room experience?
Not at all.
We regularly work with athletes who are completely new to strength training. We teach the movements, coach technique and progress the training as they become more comfortable and capable.
How many days per week should my athlete train?
For most athletes, 2–3 training sessions per week can work very well.
The right amount depends on their age, sport, practice schedule, games and other activities. More isn’t always better—the goal is to find the right amount of training to help the athlete improve.
Can athletes train during their sports season?
Yes.
In-season training may look different from off-season training. During the off-season, we generally have more opportunity to push development. During the season, we can adjust training around practices and games with an emphasis on maintaining strength and managing workload.
Is Build only for certain sports?
No.
We work with athletes from a variety of sports. While every sport has different demands, qualities like strength, speed, acceleration, explosiveness and the ability to change direction can benefit athletes across many sports.
What if my athlete isn’t very athletic yet?
That’s what training is for.
Your athlete doesn’t need to be the fastest, strongest or most experienced person in the room before they start.
We meet them where they are and help them build from there.
Have another question? Come talk with us or let your athlete experience Build for themselves.
